An Invitation from the Director of the California Department of Aging

If you are visiting this page, you are probably looking for work opportunities at the California Department of Aging (CDA). The Department oversees and administers a range of programs that are provided through local networks of Area Agencies on Aging, Multipurpose Senior Services providers and Community Based Adult Service (Adult Day Health Care) centers throughout the state. These programs serve older adults, adults with disabilities, and family caregivers throughout the state.

CDA has 115 employees all here at our headquarters in Sacramento. As a relatively small state department, we all work very closely across our program and administrative teams to achieve the Department’s mission. A previous state leader called CDA “small but mighty” and year in and year out we continue to live up to that description. That enthusiasm, commitment, and creativity, coupled with a sense of meaning in the work that we do comes through in our employees.

In writing this message, I asked a few relatively new employees to anonymously share what they would tell someone thinking about applying for a position at CDA. Here are their thoughts:

****

"When thinking about how I could describe CDA, I thought about what I value the most about working here and came across a quote that I thought would be fitting.

"Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." - Henry Ford

Though CDA is a relatively smaller department, I feel that we stand out from the rest and make an impact when it counts. The cohesiveness amongst the department and positive leadership of working together to accomplish common goals set forth is unique."

"My supervisor and co-workers at CDA are always willing to take the time to answer any questions, listen to what I have to say, and have made me feel a part of the team from day one. The camaraderie at CDA is strong and I believe it is one of the reasons that our programs are successful and meaningful to those we serve."

"I remember thinking that according to the job announcement, this will be a great opportunity to gain hands on experience working on contracts and budgets, two areas I am very interested in, which will enhance my professional growth. One of the things I enjoyed with my former employer was the regular travel. This position will allow me to continue to do so. Great location. My Credit Union and the Post Office are right around the corner along with a multitude of restaurants and retail stores. And parking is free!"

****

"The CDA sounds like a place where I can use my experience and continue to make a difference in the lives of elderly Californians."

****

"Coming back to work a second time at the California Department of Aging says it all! The work is meaningful and rewarding because what we do improves the lives of seniors and adults with disabilities. CDA has a very positive, friendly culture that I believe is unique among organizations, contributed to by its smaller size but also the type of person who chooses to work here. My colleagues are smart and dedicated, and make it enjoyable to come to work. I'm glad to be back!"

If you are interested in a career that will allow you to make a difference while really using and expanding your skills, I would encourage you to apply for one of the CDA positions listed.
