CDA is flipping the script on aging: moving away from outdated stereotypes to celebrate aging as a time of strength, growth, and continued contribution. Let’s celebrate the experience and possibilities that come with every new chapter.
We've compiled resources to help you strengthen the way aging is framed in your communications, because how we talk about aging shapes how we all experience it. Use our Outreach Toolkit to share these messages with your audiences.

Watch a recording of the April 23 "Flipping the Script on Aging" webinar from CDA and the National Center to Reframe Aging. The webinar focused on ways to strengthen the language used to describe and communicate with older adults. Viewers will gain practical tools, research-backed language tips, and real-world examples to help craft messages that resonate across generations.
Changing the Narrative was one of the first nationwide initiatives to end ageism, founded in 2018. The organization’s vision is a world without ageism — one where the strengths and contributions of people of all ages are honored and appreciated, with public policies in place to ensure that all of us can thrive at any age. Changing the Narrative’s work is now embedded in other organizations, but its information remains available. Reference the Guidelines for Age-Inclusive Communications for more tips.
The American Psychological Association offers style guidelines to use bias-free language, including talking about age groups, with a focus on older adults. These are similar to the AP Style Guidelines.
Communication is not just words — images also have an impact on perceptions and biases. CDA recommends the use of inclusive, positive images showing older adults engaging with others. AARP and the FrameWorks Institute developed these guidelines to reframe aging through images.
See how CDA puts these concepts into practice in our own Written Style Guidelines.
Use the Outreach Toolkit created for Older Californians Month to spread the word — both about reframing aging and encouraging conversations about aging.
