Gene Campbell’s expertise with the ins and outs of Medicare has served him well — as both a fraud investigator with the Senior Medicare Patrol as well as a HICAP counselor. The former helps preserve the system’s integrity, while the latter gives him a sense of fulfillment.
"When I’m successful helping someone deal with an issue, I get a charge out of it," says Gene, a 12-year counselor with Orange County’s HICAP, or Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program.
People needing advice often start a conversation with "’I just have one little question,’ and it never is," Gene says with a laugh. "From that person to the one who has a catastrophe going on, they’re all important.
"Every time I talk to a client, I feel it’s making a positive difference for them," Gene continues. "It makes me feel good to know I’m helping. You’ve got to love working with people and enjoy problem-solving. If you do, it’s a great way to spend your time."
Gene’s story reflects the positive impact of 50 years of dedicated services, highlighting California’s ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of older adults.
