Maricela Flores

Older Californians Nutrition Program

Her mother’s death was hard on Maricela Flores. She couldn’t bring herself to continue some of the activities they used to enjoy doing together — like dining at the South El Monte Senior Center, part of a decade-long mother-daughter routine — because it represented a painful reminder of the mother she missed.

When Maricela worked up courage to return, instead of pain she found encouragement, new friends, and delicious, nutrition-packed meals that help boost both physical and mental health.

"I’m delighted," Maricela says. "The warmth and hospitality have really helped me cope with my depression. Now I can create these beautiful memories."

Nutrition programs are among many services empowering older adults in California for 50 years and counting.
